Martha Cannon

RCVS Specialist in Feline Medicine
Martha Cannon is an RCVS Specialist in Feline Medicine and a partner at the Oxford Cat Clinic, a first opinion and medical referral cat-only clinic in Oxford (www.oxfordcatclinic.co.uk). She graduated from Cambridge University in 1992 and remained briefly at the university to work as a small animal anaesthetist, before moving into small animal practise in Canterbury, where she established a radio-active Iodine treatment centre for hyperthyroid cats. She gained the RCVS Certificate in Small Animal Medicine while in first opinion practice there before becoming Feline Advisory Bureau Clinical Scholar in Feline Medicine at Bristol Vet School. She then moved to Oxfordshire to work in private practice again, gained the RCVS Diploma in Small Animal Medicine (Feline) in 2002, and attained RCVS Recognised Specialist Status the same year. In March 2006 she established the Oxford Cat Clinic with her friend and colleague Caroline Blundell. Martha is a trustee director of the Feline Advisory Bureau and a member of the GCCF Veterinary Sub-committee. She is a regular speaker at continuing education meetings for veterinary surgeons and veterinary nurses.

Nuala Summerfield
RCVS Recognised Specialist in Veterinary Cardiology
BSc BVM&S DipACVIM(Cardiology) DipECVIM-CA (Cardiology) MRCVS
Nuala qualified from Edinburgh Veterinary School. She then completed a cardiology residency at the University of Pennsylvania and was awarded her ACVIM diploma in cardiology in 2002. Nuala was Lecturer in Cardiology and ran the Cardiology referral service at the University of Liverpool between 2002-2005. Nuala joined a multidisciplinary referral practice in Surrey called North Downs Specialist Referrals in 2006, where she established a busy cardiology referral service. Nuala was made an ECVIM diplomate in cardiology earlier this year. She has a particular interest in dilated cardiomyopathy and arrhythmias, as well as interventional treatment of congenital heart disease. She is currently involved with the PROTECT Dobermann Dilated Cardiomyopathy study.

Shailen Jasani

Shailen graduated from Cambridge University in 1999. He initially worked in a small animal hospital before undertaking an internship at the Royal Veterinary College, London. Thereafter Shailen spent three years doing both first opinion and referral Emergency and Critical Care practice. In July 2006, Shailen started an ECC residency at the Royal Veterinary College that ended in June 2009, and he is now eligible to sit diploma exams for the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care. Shailen has a particular interest in helping to progress development of ECC in the non-referral setting.

Susan Shaw graduated from the Sydney University, Australia in 1974. She is currently Senior lecturer, Department of Clinical Veterinary Science, University of Bristol, and is a Diplomate of both American and EuropeanColleges of Veterinary Internal Medicine and Fellow of the AustralianCollege of Veterinary Scientists. Susan’s current interests are the epidemiology and immunopathogenesis of vector borne and zoonotic infectious diseases of dogs and cats. She heads the Acarus Unit for investigation of companion animal arthropod-borne infections, is an independent member of the Veterinary Policy Group of the BVA and past Chairman of the BSAVA Scientific Committee.

Dr Susan North
BSc (Hons), PhD, DVM, DipACVIM (Medical Oncology), DipACVR (Radiation Oncolgy), DipECVIM-CA (Medical Oncology and Internal Medicine), MRCVS, RCVS Recognised Specialist in Oncology, European and American Specialist in Medical Oncology, Specialist in Radiation Oncology.
“Susan (always Susan never Sue) is the most highly qualified and the most experienced Veterinary Oncologist in the UK seeing 100’s of cases every year. Until recently Susan was the only qualified Veterinary Radiation Oncologist in the UK but has now been joined at VRCC, her Essex based Referral Centre, by another Veterinary Radiation Oncologist, so VRCC have the only 2 in the UK. Susan obtained her PhD in 1982 from the University of London at the Royal Marsden Hospital. The topic of her PhD was the Immunology of Cancer Metastasis. Susan then went on to become Assistant Professor in the department of Tumour Biology at MD Anderson Cancer Centre Hospital in Houston Texas before deciding to move into the field of Veterinary Medicine, receiving her DVM from Texas A&M and completed a residency in Oncology at the Animal Medical Centre in New York. Susan is boarded in Medical and Radiation Oncology. In 2002 Susan established VRCC a 24/7 Referral Centre in which she installed the first Linear Accelerator for Radiotherapy Treatment in a private centre in Europe and VRCC was the first to install a new generation CT Scanner. Susan’s book, Small Animal Oncology: An introduction, was published in July 2009. With her 40 strong team at VRCC, which includes 20 Vets and 10 Specialists, Susan treats patients from all over the UK who are referred for the latest and most advanced treatments. Susan is constantly moving Small Animal Cancer Treatment forward.”

Ariane Neuber
DrMedVet, CertVD, Dipl ECVD, MRCVS European and RCVS Specialist in Veterinary Dermatology
Ariane completed her veterinary medicine degree at the University of Munich and after a spell in small animal practice returned to university to achieve her doctorate. Following an Internship at the Animal Health Trust in Newmarket, she moved north to take up the Senior Clinical Scholarship in Veterinary Dermatology at the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies in Edinburgh and achieved her dermatology certificate in 2002. In 2005 she passed the exam for the European Diploma of Veterinary Dermatology. She has started her own dermatology referral service, Derm4Pets, in 2004 and was recognised as an RCVS Specialist in Veterinary Dermatology in 2008. She currently sees dermatological referrals in 2 clinics north west of London, Chiltern Referrals in Chalfont St Giles and Active Vetcare Referrals in Maidenhead. Her special interests lie with ear problems, autoimmune and allergic skin diseases.

Dr Stephen C Shaw
BVetMed CertSAD MRCVS
Steve Shaw qualified from the Royal Veterinary College in 1987. He spend 4 years in practice before becoming Junior clinical fellow in dermatology at the Animal Health Trust Newmarket. He gained his RCVS Certificate in Dermatology in 1992 and his PhD studying atopic dermatitis in dogs in 2000. From 2001 to 2006 he was head of dermatology at the AHT and from 2006 to 2009 worked at Rutland House Referrals in St Helens. Steve now works as an independent dermatology consultant part-time whilst studying from the ECVD and RCVS Diplomas in Dermatology. Steve is the National Dermatology Advisor in Dermatology to Guide Dogs and is currently an RCVS examiner for the Cert VD.

Sally Turner

Sally Turner qualified from the Universityof Cambridgein 1991.She spent 2 years in small animal practicebefore taking up a Residency in Comparative Ophthalmology as GDBA Fellow at the Animal Health Trust, Newmarket.She gained her Certificate in Ophthalmology in 1994 and then the Diploma in 1997.She is an RCVS Recognised Specialist in Veterinary Ophthalmology and currently works at both Stone Lion and MandevilleVeterinaryHospitals. In addition to providing a full ophthalmology referral service for client’s pets,she lectures regularlyto both veterinary surgeons and nurses, is involved with RCVS examining and is the author of two books on veterinary ophthalmology.

Mr Nicholas J Bacon

Clinical Assistant Professor, Surgical Oncology
Nick qualified from Cambridge Vet School in 1997 and after 2 years in general practice returned to Cambridge as the Petsaver’s resident in Soft Tissue Surgery and Oncology. He became a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2003 and spent the next 2 years in soft tissue referral practice at Dick White Referrals in Six Mile Bottom. In 2005 he moved to Colorado to complete a Fellowship in Surgical Oncology at the Animal Cancer Center at Colorado State University. Nick then moved across the country to join the Faculty at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine, initially as a soft tissue surgeon, but he now works in the Oncology department as one of 2 surgical oncologists. In 2009 he became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. The University of Florida is now one of only 2 training centres in the world offering a Surgical Oncology Fellowship.
His surgical interests include head and neck surgery, reconstructive surgery, musculoskeletal oncology and urogenital tumours.

Professor John E Cooper
DTVM, FRCPath, FIBiol, FRCVS, Diplomate, European College of Veterinary Pathologists
Graduate in veterinary science at Bristol University, UK, in 1966 and gained MRCVS. Postgraduate training and qualifications in tropical veterinary medicine (DTVM), avian medicine and pathology (FRCVS), comparative pathology (FRCPath, Dip.ECVP) and biology ( C.Biol, FIBiol).
Currently serving as Professor of Veterinary Pathology at the University of the West Indies, Trinidad.

Mrs Margaret E Cooper
LLB, FLS
Graduated in law from Bristol University, UK, in 1965 and qualified as a Solicitor of the Supreme Court in 1969. Spent several years in Africa, with her husband, mainly in Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda and Uganda. In the UK she was a member of the Farm Animal Welfare Council (FAWC) and (1999) a member of the Zoo Standards Review team.
Works as a free-lance writer and consultant, lectures at various universities, particularly at post-graduate level, on legal and allied matters. Author of two books and many papers on animal and conservation law.

Dr Clare Rusbridge
BVMS PhD DECVN MRCVS European and RCVS Specialist in Veterinary Neurology
After graduating from the University of Glasgow in 1991 with distinction in both Veterinary Medicine and Surgery, Dr Clare Rusbridge completed an internship at the University of Pennsylvania then spent some time in general practice in Cambridgeshire. After a BSAVA/Petsavers Residency in Neurology at the Royal Veterinary College she became a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Neurology in 1996 and gained RCVS Specialist status in 1999. She was awarded a PhD from Utrecht University in February 2007 for her thesis on Chiari-like malformation & Syringomyelia. Since August 1997 she has operated a Neurology Referral and MRI service at the Stone Lion Veterinary Centre in Wimbledon, London UK. Clare has published extensively on syringomyelia producing book chapters and electronic resources in addition to peer reviewed scientific papers. She continues clinical research into the genetics, management and pathogenesis of the condition. Her other professional interests include other causes of neuropathic pain (in particular feline orofacial pain syndrome), epilepsy, feline neurology, and inherited diseases. Notable honours include being appointed a Feline Advisory Bureau Feline Expert in 2005 and awarded Life Patron of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club of the Rand South Africa in 2009.

Professor Peter Bedford
BVetMed PhD FRVCS DV Opthal.Diplomate ECVO
A graduate of the Royal Veterinary College, London, Peter Bedford was the GDBA Professor of Canine Medicine and Surgery at the College (1992 to 2002) and Head of the Department of Small Animal Medicine and Surgery (1996 to 2002). Currently he is the Emeritus Professor of Veterinary Ophthalmology (London University), working at the RVC and in private practice primarily in ophthalmology in all domestic species. He gained his PhD for studies on canine glaucoma and his RCVS Fellowship for work on aqueous dynamics. He is an RCVS Foundation Diplomate in Veterinary Ophthalmology (1982) and a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (1993). He is a Past President of the BSAVA (1982-1983) and a Past President of the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (1994-1996). He was President of the European Society of Veterinary Ophthalmology (1987-1991) and is currently a Genetics Committee Member for the European College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists. He is a RCVS registered Specialist in Veterinary Ophthalmology. His interests include all aspects of veterinary and comparative ophthalmology, and current research includes angle bypass surgery for the treatment of canine glaucoma, the aetiology of retinal pigment epithelial dystrophy in the dog and inherited ocular disease in the dog.

Mr Grant Petrie
MA VetMB CertSAC CertSAM MRCVS
Grant Petrie qualified from Cambridge University in 1987. He undertook an internship at Bristol University Veterinary School before a period in private practice. He was Resident in Small Animal Internal Medicine at the Royal Veterinary College, London from 1994-1998. After a further period in private referral practice, he returned to the RVC as a lecturer in small animal medicine. He now offers an internal medicine referral service in London at the Portman and Bayswater Referral Clinics. He is also Junior Vice President of the BSAVA.
